Thanksgiving 2006
2006.11.20 12:00:00
I can’t believe it’s been so long since I let everyone know what’s going on around PrideRock. Seasons have come and gone, the leaves are falling and time gets away. It will be impossible to remember all the good things that have come our way and the people who make it all happen. Thanksgiving is a good time to remember and be grateful for our blessed animals and friends. We had a priest come out last weekend and bless each and every one which was awe-inspiring. All the cats and canines seem healthy and happy which is most important.
Apache, our elderly cougar, is still getting around with the help of some medications, eating well and seemingly enjoying his days with his companion Lakota. Pharaoh, one of our lions, lost some weight through the summer and we were getting concerned about him, but he is now putting it back on. I think like all of us, the heat drained him and he just didn’t feel like eating. He is such a sweet boy and loves attention almost more than eating. They are all very spoiled and each one has different needs and desires, which we try to fulfill. The tiger water troughs were moved recently as they don’t spend as much time in the water when it cools down, although Rambo, still gets in the play pen pool at every opportunity, which is always available. He is still waiting patiently to get moved into his new area, so we let him into the play pen often to get some exercise. Gary is now recuperating from his second hip surgery and without the help of some good volunteers; I couldn’t have done everything I had to do. Of course, you can’t keep him down long and he is trying to help me with the feedings in the evenings probably more than he should. He misses being out with the animals and I know they miss him. With the weather cooling off, their appetites and energy levels are harder to keep up with. Now that it has cooled off, we got the waterfall and pool finished up for the new pen. It will be enjoyed by Nia, Nallah, and Niki next summer. We are now trying to line up welders and helpers to get the pen constructed. I think Gary’s welding days are over after 15 years of and hard work on the existing pens. He will supervise and do what he can in between working in Dallas and everything else he does. We have had some wonderful new volunteers help us out in many ways in the last few months. We had a riding mower generously donated recently along with other supplies which was awesome! Being a private facility and not open to the public, we continue to have people contact us through the website that didn’t know we existed. Their words of support and donations certainly help us continue our work and fulfill our dreams for these wonderful animals. Our friends at Tiger Creek donated the box for a walk-in freezer last spring and all we had to do was seek donations for the freezer unit, concrete slab and electrical connections. We finally got it up and running not long ago. It has made a huge difference in the efficiency of storing and transferring our meat. Little and big things make such a difference! J We were notified recently of an amazing little six year old boy, Harvey, in England that went on a sponsored bike ride to raise money for PrideRock. The money he raised is so appreciated and will be put to good use. THANK YOU HARVEY for all your support and energy!!! J Sandy, one of our volunteers and board members, has lots of projects going for us. Recently she arranged for PrideRock to adopt a section of highway in Terrell. It is pretty cool seeing the highway sign with our name on it. She plans to get a group together periodically to clean up the highway. Thanks Sandy!! Art and Bev, our retired RVers who planned to park and stay with us for six months or so to help out, left recently. Unfortunately, the work required for RVers to winter at PrideRock was just more than they had expected. Thanks to Art and Bev though for the short time they were there! J Thanks to all the friends and volunteers who have untiringly given so much this year. We hope that you have a blessed Thanksgiving and holiday season! Carol
